Exhibitions
Our exhibits and collections which date back to the 1800s provide visitors with a realistic glimpse of the rich, varied and interesting history of not only Warkworth but its surrounding districts. Complementing our permanent displays we also have temporary exhibits which focus on a particular aspect of the past.
Early Settlement
Your tour through the museum begins with a summary of the early settlement of the area. This ranges from a glimpse of items that relate to the first settlement by Māori through to the later arrival of Europeans in their search for timber and the subsequent development of the shipbuilding industry.
Development of the Area
The next section shows the development of Warkworth and the surrounding areas. It illustrates such things as the special nature of various settlements as well as events and activities that were part of earlier times in the district.
Upstairs
The displays on the next floor are aimed at showcasing aspects of daily life in the past, both domestic and commercial. It also houses the textiles department’s display area which is a rotating display designed to showcase their extensive collection.
Outside
As well as exploring buildings and equipment that are part of the history of the community, you can also see the building that houses equipment, machinery and various items that relate mainly to early industry in the area. This building is not always open.
